They didn’t eat it all. Two hours Renate sat next to Washington, staring silently and motionlessly at the screen. She was almost petrified. When the credits rolled, she got up and left the cinema without a word. Washington followed her. It had cooled down considerably. Despite not knowing where he should spend the night, he was glad that he didn’t have to sit in the cinema any longer.

“Man, that was crap,” he said when they stepped out on the pavement.

“It was … it was so long.” Renate seemed crestfallen.

Washington nodded. “Yeah, they could’ve edited it down a bit.”

“He was mocking the Führer.”

She sounded disgusted, and he wondered what exactly she had expected from the movie. She’s been living on the moon since birth, he thought. Who knows what they’ve been telling her up there.

“I’m getting the sense there’s a lot about Nazis you don’t know,” he said cautiously.

Renate exhaled. “But I am a Nazi.”

“Oh yeah, yeah, I know.” He nodded. “But you’re not like …”

Washington was looking for a suitable comparison. He looked around. Most people he saw hurried past them with lowered heads, probably on their way home. Finally he noted a group of young neo-Nazis standing on a corner, drinking beer and swearing. They wore bomber jackets and Swastika armbands. The other passers-by attempted to avoid them.

He pointed to the men. “Like them, those stupid baldies.”

Renate turned around, eyeing them for a moment. She seemed to see something completely different from Washington.

“No,” she said. “I’m certain they’re good boys and loyal to the Reich, and their mothers. Look, they wear the symbol of love.”

“The Swastika?” asked Washington, confused. “I never heard it called that before.”

Renate wasn’t listening. She approached the neo-Nazis.

Oh no, Washington thought. He wanted to hold her back, but she was out of his reach already. He had no other choice but to follow her.

The neo-Nazis looked up when she stopped in front of them. The light of the streetlamps reflected on their bald heads.

“Good evening, boys,” Renate said friendly in German.

“And who have we got here?” One of them stepped forward; the other three stood by grinning. They were heavily built men, smelling of alcohol and not capable of understanding the three words of German Renate had spoken.

Their leader sized her up suggestively. “Blond hair, blue eyes …” His eyes strayed deeper. “Nice rack. Even Hitler would get a hard on.”

The others laughed out loud.

Washington pushed Renate back. She seemed shocked.

“Guys,” he said. For the first time he was glad to be white. “We don’t want any trouble, right. Just hit the road.”

The neo-Nazi leader grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and pulled him close. His eyes were glinting. “You hit the road, hobo.”

Washington didn’t defend himself and merely put his hands up. He could see that they were hoping for a fight, and he didn’t know what they were hiding underneath their bomber jackets.

“Hey, I got a funny story to tell ya. You ain’t gonna believe this, but I …”

That’s as far as he got.
